π΄π€Ώ Dive into the mysterious depths of the ocean with us as we encounter the remarkable flying gurnard. Watch as this unique fish 'walks' across the seabed with its wing-like pectoral fins, creating an otherworldly spectacle. π
Did you know that the flying gurnard, also known as Dactylopterus volitans, is a bottom-dwelling fish found in tropical to warm temperate waters on both sides of the Atlantic? Despite its name, it doesn't fly but uses its impressive pectoral fins to 'walk' along the ocean floor. These fins are semi-translucent with phosphorescent electric-blue spots along the edges, making them a stunning sight. The flying gurnard has a boxy elongated body that tapers towards the tail and can grow up to 50 cm (20 inches) in length. It feeds on crustaceans like small crabs and shrimps, small fish, and bivalves like clams.
